College for Students with Special Needs

 

 

One of the Special Education Advisory Council parent reps from BV Southwest HS attended a recent College Night for Students with Disabilities.  She graciously shared the following information:

 

CLEAR program at Johnson County Community College (JCCC)

 

 

PROPEL program at University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC)

 

  • 2 year, full time college experience
  • Non-degree; certificate only; I believe a few credited classes are taken and can be applied to a future degree after program completion
  • Participate in internships to prepare for future employment
  • Can live on campus during second year

ACED program at University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC)

 

  • Non-credited, independent living/life enhancing training
  • 6 week classes; $7 per class; also offered at Avila & Graceland Universities
  • Must be a resident of Jackson County
  • Sounds similar to CLEAR program at JCCC

KU-TPE Program at University of Kansas (KU)

 

  • 2 year, full time college experience
  • Non-degree; certificate only; I believe a few credited classes are taken and can be applied to a future degree after program completion
  • Participate in internships to prepare for future employment
  • Able to live on campus, however, students are integrated in with general population as opposed to their own floor, RA, etc.

 

 

OUT OF STATE PROGRAMS

 

THRIVE program at University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg (UCM)

 

  • 2 year, full time college experience – generally for non-degree seeking students
  • Non-degree; certificate only; Any credit classes taken can be applied to a future degree after program completion
  • Participate in internships to prepare for future employment
  • Students live in dorms on campus; all program participants are on the same floor with student mentors
  • $5,000 fee per semester in addition to regular tuition/fees (in-state tuition costs for KC metro)

EMPOWER program at University of Arkansas, Fayetteville (U of A)

 

  • 4 year, non-degree program
  • Very new – currently only three students enrolled and only one staff member:  Ashley Bradley ([email protected])
  • $5,000 fee per semester in addition to regular tuition/fees (including out-of-state costs, if applicable)

UI REACH program at University of Iowa, Iowa City (U of I)

 

  • 2 year, full time college experience – generally for non-degree seeking students
  • Non-degree; certificate only; Any credit classes taken can be applied to a future degree after program completion
  • Participate in internships to prepare for future employment
  • Students live in dorms on campus; all program participants supported by UI Reach trained assistants
  • Program has been in existence for 10 years; out-of-state costs apply (currently around $42K a year)
