Advocating & Communicating for Kansans with Developmental Disabilities

Advocating & Communicating for
Kansans with Developmental Disabilities
On Wednesday over 1,000 Kansans from the I/DD community visited their legislature and spoke to their representatives about their needs.  On Thursday, the response from their legislature was a sharp slap in the face.
Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee voted to refuse waiting list dollars to persons with developmental disabilities IF I/DD services are carved out of KanCare.  This cruel and punitive action against the most vulnerable Kansas citizens is a sad commentary on how low some members of the Kansas legislature have sunk.
It was only last week that Gov. Brownback touted the savings that KanCare has already produced as the reason he was able to set aside some funds (enough to serve 200 of the 5,000 on the list) for the waiting list in next year’s budget.  Now some are claiming those savings will only occur by inclusion in KanCare, which of course means they do intend to cut services which is what advocates have feared all along.
This outrage must not stand.  Contact your Representatives, Senators, and the Governor TODAY and tell them this punitive action is an attempt to suffocate the democratic process andmust not be tolerated.
The desperation of these tactics makes the argument for carve out all the more compelling and necessary.
