Breakout Sessions
Strategies to Help Children with Challenging Behaviors
Presented by Darla Nelson-Metzger, Education Advocate Coordinator & Family Resource Specialist, Families Together, Inc. and mother of five children from elementary to high school age. Darla enjoys working with families of children who present with challenging behaviors and often works with teams in the development of behavior intervention plans. In this workshop, parents will learn strategies to use at home and school to help their children who have challenging behaviors. We will discuss multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and school-wide positive behavior supports. Parents will understand the functional behavioral assessment process and how to use those results to develop a positive and meaningful behavior intervention plan to create change for their children.

From Isolation to Celebration: A Family Story
Presented by Leia Holley, Family Resource and Health Specialist, Families Together, Inc. and mother of two spectacular young men, JP and Sean. Sean has autism and health care needs. Join Leia as she shares her family’s story. Their journey begins with Sean’s diagnosis of autism and the words ‘he will never’ and continues through Sean’s incredible journey as the first student with significant autism and health care needs to be included in his school and community. Throughout this presentation, Leia will share strategies and resources that empowered her to go from an ‘outsider’ to a vital member of Sean’s IEP and medical teams. Participants will gain resources and a better understanding of how to effectively advocate for their own children or for students in their educational settings.
